The "Who Am I?" Essay

I've always found it odd and difficult to talk about myself. It either feels like bragging or undermining myself, but I'll do my best. I'm a pretty easy going person and I can get along with almost anyone. I love to laugh and have a good time, and really enjoy the company of others who feel the same. All of my closest friends have a great sense of humor. I love meeting new people who share the same geeky ass hobbies as I do.

Speaking of geeky ass hobbies: cosplay. It of course stems from plenty of other nerd habits like my love of anime, manga, video games, and sewing. I really love the craft aspect of creating cosplay projects and the marvelous escapist attributes the finished costumes provide. There's a surreal feeling when you don a costume you've spent so much time and dedication to creating. I love going to conventions when resources allow and dressing up with my fellow cosplayers. Cosplay is simply good clean fun for me. Its also a great character building experience. When I started cosplaying back in 2000 or so I had next to no sewing experience and really nobody else in my life who shared my fascination anime. Now I feel much more confident in my abilities and I have a ton of friends to share my hobby with. I really don't like rushing my projects so typically I only make one or two costumes per year.

My actual "life" life isn't that interesting so I won't go into much detail other than to say I'm a full time nursing student and I love what I do. I love going out on the weekends to party with my friends and chilling at home during the week. I live with my computers and my TV, where I ingest copious amounts of the science channel.

F.A.Q. Time

Q: Wtf is a GimmeCat?
A: The gimme cat is a monster in Final Fantasy IX that asks you for a diamond. When you hand over said diamond it takes off leaving you with one less diamond. I fell for the trap and it cracked me up, and somehow I couldn't get over the pun. First off it looks silly as hell, and I can admire any sort of craftiness. And well, I needed an online name. I DUB THEE GIMMECAT. (Also, I collect any awesome GimmeCat fan art or screenshots so always feel free to send them my way along with the artist's name if its a fanart)

Q: What inspires your costumes?
A: There has been the occasional 'got talked into it' costume, but my preference is to make costumes of characters I admire or can somehow relate to. A lot of cosplayers are very talented at picking a pretty character whom they don't especially identify with and creating a beautiful costume. I have found this isn't exactly so with me. I lose steam and sometimes don't complete the project if my heart isn't really in it. Don't get me wrong, I love making costumes but its definitely a lot of hard work and its much easier to get discouraged if I'm not motivated by character interest.

Q: Can I use your picture for my website?
A: Sure, but please don't hotlink the picture; I'm on limited bandwidth. I also request you give me the credit (aka, link back to this website).

Q: How did you make ______ costume?
A: I try to include a small description of how the costume was made, and if that doesn't satisfy your questions you're just going to have to use your imagination. Its not that I am disinclined to answer your inquiries, I just have a limited amount of time to spend at my computer between school and real life.

Q: Givith forth some noodie pictures?
A:   (  o  Y  o  )

Q: You have like, zero awards. Don't you ever compete in costume contests?
A: Nah, the only time I compete is at Simucons and that in itself is just a small gaming convention with my close friends. I really don't enter bigger conventions because 1) I lack the competitive spirit and 2) while I am not really a shy person, I have horrible stage fright and a terrible fear of public speaking.

Q: Why did you put CG in some of your cosplay costumes? (Bad CG at that...)
A: Until not to long ago I was a single gal with nothing but a timer on my camera. I could set it up, run across the room and pose against my apartment wall and hope it turned out okay. Most of the time it didn't, and when it did it was an ugly plaster wall. I'm really not that adept with photoshop but anything was better than that nasty ass wall.

Q: Dude, anon is tearing you a new orifice for being too fat/ugly/short/skinny/resembling-an-ape-with-downs on 4chan. WHAT DO WE DO?
A: Oh come on now. I didn't go into cosplay thinking I'd get all positive feedback. :]

Q: Can I link to you?
A: Sure!

Q: Will you link to me?
A: Sure!

And uh, that's all folks! Thanks for stopping by!
